VoIP Minimum Requirements

Not sure if your numbers are good enough? Here's exactly what Fosters Telecom recommends for reliable business calling.

✅ Great for VoIP
Download Speed25+ Mbps
Upload Speed10+ Mbps
Ping / Latency< 70 ms
Jitter< 20 ms
Packet Loss0%
⚠️ Acceptable
Download Speed10–25 Mbps
Upload Speed5–10 Mbps

Jitter20–40 ms

❌ May Cause Issues
Download Speed< 10 Mbps
Upload Speed< 5 Mbps

Each VoIP line uses approximately 100 Kbps of upload and download. A 10-user office needs at least 1–2 Mbps dedicated to voice — well within most business internet plans.

What Each Number Actually Means

Speed isn't the only thing that matters for VoIP. Here's what to look at — and why.

⬇️
Download Speed
How fast data comes to your device. For VoIP, 10 Mbps or more is plenty for most offices. This is rarely the bottleneck.
⬆️
Upload Speed
How fast data leaves your network. Upload is critical for VoIP — your voice travels outbound. Aim for at least 5 Mbps for a small team.
⏱️
Ping / Latency
The round-trip delay between your device and the server. Under 70ms is ideal. High latency causes noticeable delay in conversations — the "over and out" effect.
📊
Jitter
How consistent your connection is. Jitter is the #1 cause of choppy or robotic-sounding calls. Even a fast connection with high jitter will sound terrible on VoIP. Keep it under 20ms.
